How I Did in March

Branson Landing

Branson Landing

It is hard to believe that March is already over. It is time now to see how well I have done this month. My affirmation is: “I Seek First to Understand, then to be understood.” My intentions were to begin working on developing new relationships, however, the direction I ended up taking was in solidifying the relationships of those closest to me. I spent time developing the relationship with my roommates kids so that we are as much strangers as we have been since I moved in. Second, I went on a trip with my daughter to Branson. Three, I spent time with my son Jonathan who was here this month from Hawaii. I had a great time with my children at Colton’s Steak House.

I determined that I would change my headings for the month toward that direction. I have determined that I will be calling my children more, not so much to bother them like an old busy-body, but to let them know that their mother thinks about them every day. I am really grateful that each of my children have their own lives and that I prepared them toward being independent individuals. I know I am not a perfect mother, but I at least have allowed each of them to develop independent of me. Each one of them is capable of standing on their own two feet, even my not quite 14 year-old daughter.

Keeping Up With January and February Affirmations

I have not forgotten my affirmations from January and February either.

January, if you remember was “I am Organized and Productive.I have (for the most part) continued to use the schedule that I set up for myself in January.  I have continued with that in that I have cleaned out a closet that needed organization. In addition, I have made changes on my novel A Coward’s Solace as my first beta reader suggested and I handed it off to my second beta reader. I have also kept up with submitting to Bubblews and writing this blog regularly. In addition, I have been working on developing my author platform. I have started making arrangements for putting my book A Coward’s Solace Back out as a free book on April 4 & 5.

February My affirmation was “I am Energetic, Fit, Strong, and Healthy”. This month, I have been exercising on my roommate’s elliptical machine as well as continuing to eat healthy foods and taking vitamins. I HAVE NOT BEEN DIETING, I have simply been eating healthier and yet since last July drum roll peace, I have lost 30 pounds. It may not be fast weight loss, but like the tortoise, slow and steady will win in this race. I am seriously thinking about writing a book about this health gaining experience.

Coming Up In April

April’s Affirmation is “I Am A Spirit Being On A Physical Journey”. This month in honor of the fact that Easter, my blog will focus on Godly women of the Bible. Over the past few years, as I have read my Bible, I have found that many traditions concerning women of the Bible are inaccurate and have been promoted by books like Dan Brown’s The De Vince Code.. I am not sure exactly why this is true. Some of it may be because of the fact that our western culture is based on patriarchal society. Other reasons may be because Christianity has over the years embraced certain pagan traditions as Christian traditions.

I want to look at the Godly women of the Bible and determine how these women relate to me as a modern Christian woman. What can I take away from their experiences in my growth this year? Even more important, how can I share these insights with other women?

This is my son Jonathan as a baby.

Jonathan,  my middle child, messaged me on Facebook a couple weeks ago that he was going to be home from Hawaii where he is a Chinese Linguist for the United States Air Force. I have not seen him in about two years so I was excited that he was coming home. Not that he was going to be staying at my house. He is a lot like I was when I was younger and in the military, he wants to spend most of his time with his friends, not with his family. Because I was like that when I was his age, I completely understand. Family is, well, family and they will always be there for you when you’re ready.

As his mother, however, who has gone through the recent loss of her father, sister, and brother, I know, however, that family is far more precious than we realize. Even though I understand that he does not want to spend all of his week’s vacation with his family, he needs to spend some time with us, so I arranged for his younger sister and his older brother and his girlfriend spend time together.

1098317_10101676629687563_1512071420_n

This is him all grown up! Where has the time gone?

The problem is logistical. Time is an issue. I work twelve hour shifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from eight to eight. My daughter lives over 120 from where I live and she goes to school during the day. My son Jeremy is a logger so if the sun is shining he’s out in the logging woods so he cannot take the amount of time off work to go to where my daughter lives.

Of course, me being Mom, I decided I would figure a way to make it happen. I decided that we would have dinner not at my house, but at a nice restaurant. This way, I could spend time with all my children rather than spending my time cooking before and cleaning up the mess afterwards. I talked to each of my children and asked them which day would be best. Because my daughter was taking part in cheer leading try-outs, the only day she had available was Tuesday. I talked to my sons and they were good with that. The next hurdle I had to go over was getting my daughter’s father’s okay to take her from school and take her 120 miles away from home on a school night. After making the promise to have her back home and in bed by ten, we had everyone on board to have dinner with their mother.

Because my truck can only hold two passengers, I borrowed a rental car so that I would have enough room for my son Jonathan and my daughter to spend some time conversing with one another on the two hour trip taking my daughter back home.

We Had a Great Time

When I picked up my daughter I predicted that her older brother would be late showing up, and that even though it was my idea that we get together, both of her brothers would try to pick up the tab. Sure enough both things happened.

My sons did not seem to compete against one another in other ways however, which I think was very admirable of them. Jonathan picked up the check and Jeremy paid the tip. Jonathan told me that he did not realize how much he and Jeremy had in common, and that he was glad to see him. Mind you, both have different philosophies in life, but both have an ethical connection to hard work. They have agreed to get together again today (Thursday) and that Jeremy would show Jonathan around. (Basically, he wants to show him his accomplishments.)

Committing to Writing Every Day

What should I do now?

What should I do now?

As a writer, finding time to write is like that. Just as I had to take every other commitment into consideration for this get together, a writer needs to take into consideration every daily commitment before committing to writing time. As you make the commitment to write on a daily basis, other things often have to take a backseat to writing time. There are only 24 hours in a day, and we cannot do everything we want to do every day. We have to determine how important that activity is. For me, a get together with my children was important than writing, so I sacrificed and got all of my children in one place at the same time. However, writing is also important to me, so I learned to resent time taken away from my writing time. If I don’ get time to write every day, I get like a baby who hasn’t had a bottle for a while. I get a little cranky.

Like Looking For a Treasure

Enter Caption here

Recently I read a book about goal setting and the author spoke of the goal as a treasure, the way to get to the treasure (goal) was the instructions to the treasure and the day to day activities as the heading, well the way that I have found myself heading was not quite where I expected to be going this month. The wind in my sails are not taking me quite in the direction that I intended to go this month. I had planned to meet a lot of new people this month, but as it happens, I have instead been reconnecting and solidifying my closest relationships.

Solidifying My Closest Ties

Earlier in the month I spent time with my roommates children and did things with them. Then I connected with a couple of close friends on the internet with intentions of getting together with them at a later date. Then I went to Branson with my daughter.

Tomorrow I will be seeing my son Jonathan who is coming back from Hawaii for a week. I will be driving the 120 miles to my estranged husband’s house to pick up my daughter and take her to a restaurant where her brothers Jonathan and Jeremy will meet us for dinner. I am not certain who all will be there, but we all like Colton’s Steak House so the food will be good. So far, everyone has agreed to the arrangement. Got to love it when a plan comes together. I definitely have to get a picture of all of us together.

Change of Heading

Because of the slight change in direction, I still find myself on course, I just changed the heading a little bit. I intend to next month work on my plan to work on establishing new relationships both in person and online. I am working on some of the ground work now that I wasn’t able to do earlier because of the weather.

I believe that it is good have a flexible plan like the one I am currently utilizing. It does feel more like being in a sailing vessel than on a speed boat though. I am gliding on the water, feeling the breeze in my hair, able to smell and taste the salty sea as I glide across the water. I hear the sea gulls as they circle the ship letting me know that land is nearby. I am just enjoying the journey.

The Edge Of My Comfort Zone

I recently heard a line on television that has me thinking. It was “life is at the edge of your comfort zone”. Although that sounds like a good saying, I personally would change it to read what I think is a more true statement  “growth is at the edge of my comfort zone”. Any time I think of period of growth in my life, i had to step to the edge of my comfort zone.To grow stronger, I have to exercise beyond what is comfortable. To grow in learning skills, I have to stretch beyond what I already know.To grow spiritually, I have to do things that are not comfortable to my ego. I’ve got to help people when I don’t want to, I have to pray when I don’t feel like it. I have to fast when I am hungry.

This dinner with my children tomorrow also takes me to the edge of my comfort zone. I am making sacrifices so that my children can be together for a meal. Not only am I leaving my comfortable home, going out to dinner and spending money, but  I am driving two 120 mile round trips in a single day so that my daughter can see her brother than she hasn’t seen in at least two years. Of course, I want this as much as anyone does! What mother wouldn’t? For a mother, no sacrifice is too much.

Making Amazing Progress On A Coward’s Solace

Soon I will be adding my new book to my published collection. I have been making amazing progress recently on my upcoming book The Locket Saga Book III- A Coward’s Solace. I just got the book back from my first beta reader who had very few corrections to make and most of those were minor grammatical errors. One mistake that she found was that I had written that George Washington rode a white roan, well, because she is a livestock person, she knew that there is no such animal as a white roan. There are red roans, blue roans, and bay roans, but there is no such animal as a white roan.  Good to know before the book is published for the general public, right?

Final cover for A Cowards Solace

Because she found so few errors in A Coward’s Solace, I was able to make the changes on Tuesday and then yesterday I took the book to my second beta reader. She has a history art degree, so if she finds few errors too and likes the story, I will be able to get it available for the general public very soon.

I have the results for the cover for the book done as well. I took the suggestions of which of four covers everyone liked. Because it had little color (it was black and white) I made the main title red but left the subtitle white and my author name black. This way when the book is in a thumbprint size, the title will still be readable.

Now that the winter weather has passed, and spring rains are upon us, I am looking forward to actually getting out and meeting people like I plan to do. Up to this point this month, I had not been able to because every Wednesday since the beginning of the month there has been no church until last Wednesday when I was in Branson with my daughter. This week, I plan to change all that, because this Wednesday I am going to one of the churches.

BransonLanding

When I spoke to those people in Branson last week, I know I should have shared my business card with them and told them that I was going to have my book When God Turned His Head available free on Kindle on April 4 & 5, but I just didn’t have the guts to do it. Perhaps I should have, but now it is too late. It was, as far as I am concerned, a missed opportunity.

Last week I did share a copy of each of my published books with my business card included  to a silent auction to earn money for a worthy cause. I also have let some sites know that I am going to be giving my books for free on those days. I do however feel really bad that I didn’t share with those employees in Branson.  I think they would have enjoyed a free copy of my book. I really need to learn to put myself out there. What is the worst that could happen? Someone say no thanks? bookcover 4

I still have not picked up my most recent draft of A Coward’s Solace from my first Beta reader. That should happen this week. I really need to get the next step done so that I can move forward toward getting the book published for the general public.

On my last post I mentioned that my daughter and I were going to Branson for her spring break, well, it didn’t last long, but that is exactly what we did. After I picked up my daughter in Springfield, we decided to go first to Branson Landing. There we checked out the stores for about an hour before heading to drop our stuff at the room.

Our Room at the Victorian Palace Hotel

Victorian

We arrived at our hotel at 3 pm on March 9. We arrived early enough so that we could drop off our suitcases to head off for the show we planned to watch that night.

The Dixie Stampede

Dixie_Stampede_Dinner___Show_(027)

We arrived at the Dixie Stampede for the 5:30 show which actually started at 4:40 with a pre-show of jugglers. The show reminds me of what Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show was like. There were horses, wagons, funny stunts, cowboys, cowgirls, Indians, animal races and the like. We had soup, a cheesy biscuit, a whole small chicken, pork loin, corn on the cob, baked potato, and an apple turnover all which we had to eat with our fingers. The think that the best part was the fact that it was so interactive. We all had a great time! After the show, we went back to our room where we got an early night so that we could conserve our energy for the following day’s events.

The Titanic Museum

Titanic museum

Our only other scheduled activity was to go to the Titanic Museum which we did on Tuesday. We each got a card at the beginning of the tour telling of one of the passengers of the ship. We were to discover whether or not our person survived. I was a young mother in second class and Boni was an older woman in first class.

One of the many things that we learned that I found coincidental was that lifesavers candies was invented the same year that Titanic sank. Titanic was considered unsinkable and there were not life boats for all of the passengers on the ship. Clarence Crane, Chocolate maker first invented Crane’s Peppermint Lifesavers in the summer of 1912. Round life-preservers with the hole in the middle for tossing to a passenger fallen overboard were just beginning to be used. But that was only half of the story. Chocolates were hard to sell in the summer, so Crane decided a mint would help increase his summertime sales. At that time, most of the mints came from Europe and were square-shaped

At the end of our tour, we discovered our Titanic person’s fate. My daughter’s woman survived and so did my person as well as her husband and child. .

Branson Landing and Tanger Outlet Mall

BransonLanding

At Branson Landing, we shopped, ate ice cream and a pretzel and shopped some more. We did the same at Tanger. Last night after a long day of shopping, we were both exhausted and didn’t feel like eating out so we stopped at the grocery store, bought a bunch of junk food and vegged out the rest of the evening in the room.

People We Met

Probably the best part of the trip for me was meeting the people. Because the tourism isn’t in full swing in Branson, the people who worked there were not all that business so they were able to stop and talk. At our hotel, I met a man from Belize who worked there. He had also worked in Doniphan and in Mammoth Springs which was not far from where I live. He had been to my town and knew the Mexicans who worked with one of my brothers. Small world, wouldn’t you say? He also had worked in Mammoth Springs where one of my current co-workers used to work. He didn’t know the people that I knew, but he knew people that knew people that I know. Which made me think about the theory of the six degrees of separation.

Another person that I found interesting was a young man who worked as a cowboy at the Dixie Stampede. I didn’t talk to him much, but just enough to discover that his name was J.R. (No, his last name was not Ewing).

At the Titanic Museum, one of the workers in the gift shop had heard me commenting on the fact that my person’s husband and child also were survivors. He was from London, England. He handled me the book based on this family. He chose the right person. I love books. I decided right away to buy it.

I talked quilts with the owner of Branson Quilts at Branson landing and had a long conversation about food with the lady who worked at the As Seen on TV Store. I told her about Bobbi Flay’s waffle french toast which she Googled. We talked a long time with Lisa at Victoria’s Secret where we bought matching sweat shirts.

Headed Home in the Morning

After several Krispie Kreme donuts and coffee, we headed home yesterday morning. Boni was home at about noon and I was home three hours later. It was not a long vacation by any stretch of the imagination, but it was loaded with memories for both of us.

Building An Important Relationship

Today, my almost 14-year-old daughter and I are going to Branson for a mini-vacation over her spring break. A big part of the reason. I have to admit, is because I feel that I have failed her in some ways as her parent.  I have to confess that I have taken her love for granted. Something I learned long ago was that a kid loves his parents unconditionally, no matter how bad the parents were as parents. When a parent is a bad parent, a dichotomy develops where the child both loves and hates the parent. They love their parent because it is in their nature. They hate the parent because it is their experience. I don’t want my daughter to hate me. I have decided it is time to make our relationship my top priority.

My daughter does not live with me. She lives with her Dad. Not because she was taken away from me, but because she loves her school and her friends there and she wanted to stay because of that. If I had taken her out of her environment, she would have resented me and I didn’t want that so, I left her with her Dad because I love her and I want her to continue to love me.Unfortunately I live over 100 miles away and I work weekends so I seldom get to see her. That is why this vacation over her spring break is important to me and to her. We are going to spend time together doing things that both of us enjoy that she is not likely to do with her Dad.

What We Are Going To Do In Branson

We are going to be staying at the Victorian Palace Hotel. I got a great deal on the room.

There’s nothing about a pool at the hotel, but I am okay with that. We decided that a pool was less important than to have money to spend shopping.

Victorian

Monday night we are going to the Dixie Stampede

This is a show that many friends have raved about so we decided that we wanted to check it out. It offers not just the show, but a huge meal that we couldn’t pass up.

Dixie_Stampede_Dinner___Show_(027)

And the Following Morning we will be going to the Titanic Museum

My daughter wants to do this and so do I. It is no secret that I like history. I think she likes it almost as much as I do.

Titanic museum

Finally, We Will Be Spending Most of Our Time Together Shopping At Branson Landing

We will be spending most of our time shopping because my daughter loves to shop. She also loves to help me pick out things for myself which is something that I am not as good as she at doing. She wants to get her spring and summer clothes. I just want to look like someone that she is proud to call Mom.

BransonLanding

Our Network Should Begin With Those Closest To Us

Networking is relationship building, so what better way to begin networking and relationship building but by getting closer to those who we care about most  By spending time with my daughter and developing a relationship, she will learn that she can trust me with the important things in her life.. Its not the activities, but it is the connection between us that draws us closer and develops that trust. I hope that my daughter learns that even though I am her mother, she can trust me.

Back in 2010 I wrote my first book. It felt like I was introducing my baby to the world and I didn’t like it when others found reason to criticize it. The problem was the book really did have problems. It had so many typos that some people didn’t like to read it. The formatting both in the print version and the e-book version were severely faulted.

Fortunately I didn’t have ten thousand copies of the book in my garage. I was smart enough to have written the book as a print-on-demand book. That was probably the only smart thing I did with that book.

Additionally, I am learning from my mistakes. I did a complete re-write of When God Turned His Head, reformatted it in print and on Kindle. My second book Soldiers Don’t Cry, The Locket Saga Continues was edited by a professional editor. I also used better formatting with that book. My third book Simply Vegetable Gardening is my first nonfiction book. It is a rewrite of numerous articles that I wrote on Hubpages. I published the book because I am passionate about this niche, and  I have a lot of experience to share.

My fourth book A Coward’s Solace I still need to get  back from my first beta reader and so I can make the necessary changes. When I finish, I will send it to my second beta reader and then to get it edited and finally I will be able to publish.

My biggest challenge in writing a book is not writing the book, editing, or formatting it. My biggest challenge is in marketing my books. if you are an author and have great tips on how to market and build platform, I would love to hear them. If you are a reader who loves the drama of great history, I believe you’ll love my books.

A Coward’s Solace

Thanks to everyone who voted for their favorite cover for my upcoming book, A Coward’s Solace.

Here is the winning cover!

I also wrote the first draft of the description.  So, what do you think? Is this a book you would want to read?  Any suggestions for improvement?

Out of the woods a feverish white man dressed as an Indian stumbles into Elizabeth Thorton McCray’s home. What is his connection with Elizabeth. Why does the sight of  this man make Martha Dawson;’s heart pound?

In the backdrop of these same frozen woods at Valley Forge, Continental Forces huddle together during the darkest hours of the American Revolution. General Washington had just suffered the worse campaigning season of his career. His contemporaries considered him a coward and incompetent. Phillip, Elizabeth’s husband, since deserting the British army is unsure what his place is in the conflict. Are these men cowards, or is some greater drama unfolding?

Change in Affirmation

What should I do now?

What should I do now?

At the end of last week, I said that I am a charismatic person would be my affirmation for the month. I, however, decided to change that to the affirmation: I  seek to understand before I seek to be understood. The action plan to promote this is still the same. I intend to seek out and meet other people to build my network both face to face and online.

One of my goals for the year is that I intend to go to churches to meet people in this area. Another thing that I intend to do is assertively build my online platform and sell my books. This month my focus is on these things.

The face to face networking will be used in part to help me build my personal contacts. The online networking will help me get to know more people online in preparation for a KDP select promotion that I intend to run it April 4 and 5.

Buy my Book Doesn’t Work!

Getting to know potential readers is a much better marketing plan than “buy my book!’. “Buy my book” is the cry a desperate person, it is not even good salesmanship. However, trying to sound like a high pressured salesman is not going to get sales either. No one wants to feel as though they have been sold.

How Does Understanding Lead to Increased Book Sales?

How does understanding others lead to increased book sales. One reason is held in the idea that “People don’t care how much we know. They want to know how much we care.” Understanding others leads to book sales is that people tend to buy things from people they trust. In addition, getting to know people helps us learn how to market to them. It is simply a matter of trust.

A Personal Journey

Not only is this month about selling more books, however, it is also about my own personal journey. A year ago, I left my husband, but my entire life was in turmoil because I realized that I didn’t have very many friends. Although it was a large city, I didn’t get to know people. Part of the reason was that every time i tried to get to know people my husband would make me feel guilty for having a life because he was stuck driving his truck to make a living. A year ago last September, my daughter and I came here to Alton to visit my friends here and he shut off our phones as punishment for making the drive to see our friends. It has been so long since I have made friends that I forgot how. This month is all about learning how to make those friends.

Not to say that I can totally blame him. I am extremely introverted which basically means that my energy comes when I am alone and it gets depleted when I am around crowds. I have tendency when I am around crowds to essentially hide behind extroverted friends. This way I don’t have to be the center of attention. I find it easier to be alone than to go out and seek companionship.

My Strengths in Relationship Building

I am not totally powerless in relationship building. I have some unique abilities. My Brigs Meyer Personality type is INFJ. The I stands for introvert but because of the other three traits, I can sometimes seem like an extrovert. The N stands for intuitive. This means that I have the ability to know things without knowing why I know those things. An intuitive person can see the big picture rather than the details. Along with the intuitiveness, I am a feeling person. Empathy is strong in me. I have a tendency to feel what another person is feeling. Finally, the J stands for judging. I have a tendency to look at things as black or white, or right or wrong. If I feel that something is wrong, I am not able to easily convince myself that it is right.

About 2 years ago I decided that I wanted to become an insurance agent. I spent the money and passed the classes and even took the test which I passed on the first try. On my first day in the field however, I know that insurance was not something that I wanted to do.Because she was always on the road, the agent I was with was having issues with her children at home. I was not about to sell my life to make money selling something that I really do not believe in selling. Above all else, I value integrity.

My strong motive for integrity makes it imperative that I live my passion and do what it is that I know I am called to do. I know that I am called to write books about the subjects that are important to me. To do anything else would never be good enough. Living in integrity of who I am and my passions is the central theme during this month as I put myself out there to meet more people.
