On August 29, 2015 from 1-3 pm my friends helped me celebrate the launch of  A Coward’s Solace, Book III of the Locket Saga. Here are  the highlights.

IMG_1073

Patrick Ledgerwood, Presiding Commissioner of Oregon County, Missouri introduced me as Author Cygnet Brown. to a room full of friends and fans.

I then thanked everyone for coming. I told them how I felt that being a self-published author was like being a farmer. This went over well because we had several farmers in the room.

IMG_1075

I told them about the process that went into the writing of the Locket Saga (which was anything but linear) and specifically about the story regarding A Coward’s Solace.

I gave a special acknowledgment to my beta readers, Auralee and Jann. I could not have presented a successful book without their help.

I gave a special acknowledgment to my beta readers, Auralee and Jann. I could not have presented a successful book without their help. Also gave special thanks to the coop for allowing me to use their facilities and to Rachel Reynolds Luster for her assistance in making this event a success.

A Change For The Better

pencil-icon

My daughter told me the other day that she hates change. I however have learned that change is the only constant so I have learned to take change in stride. My job schedule has changed so that instead of working six days per week, I am working seven days, however, I am working fewer hours per day. Friday and Saturdays I am only working three hours per day and with both of these jobs, if for some reason I cannot come in that day, I can just call in or change the day easily with another person. I will have much more flexibility with writing.  On the days when I used to work twelve hour shifts, I now work just seven and there are fewer responsibilities as well.

Changing my work pattern will be interesting in that I have more time in the mornings and in the evenings most days. It will actually open up more time to write during my best hours which is what a writer really needs. I also still have evenings clear. Three more evenings than I had on the ole schedule. I am smiling.

Final cover for A Cowards SolaceI have been thinking about what I want to write in this blog next month. One thing I have to do is finish the re-edits on my book When God Turned His Head. I hope this is the last re-edit I will have to do on that book. A lot of people who have read the book like the context of the book, but almost everyone has commented on the fact that there is a lot of typos in the book. Thanks to one of my beta reader, that should change.

Another thing that I am planning to work on next month is to work on creating my business plan. I am seriously, increasingly considering my writing as a business and a business needs a good business plan. I got a book that I am reading that is really good for this and next month I plan to share it as I develop my business plan.

Another thing that I have been thinking about stepping up my online marketing. One thing that I intend to do is to work on developing twitter tweets related to the history and characters in my books and connect my website and here in my blog. I will probably connect Facebook too because a lot of my friends find my trivia questions interesting. I have had more traffic with my trivia questions than I did with almost anything else. We will see how that works out.

As things move forward, it is time, actually, probably past time for me to look ahead and find online reviewers for A Coward’s Solace. I have to tell you that finding people to review A Coward’s Solace creates anxiety for me because I am not certain how the book will be received by other people and that makes me nervous. I, of course, think that my book is a wonderful creation. I hope others feel that way, but like my children, I am prejudice toward my own creation. So right now, while I am finishing the final preparations for my book launch, I am also working on finding these reviewers and asking them what they think. I have done this before so I know the drill. I am learning to have a thick skin.

If you are interested in reviewing my book, please let me know by replying below. I will get back with you with a free e-copy of Book III of The Locket Saga: A Coward’s Solace..

Book Launch in Final Preparations

Just nine more days until my book launch! I am so nervous and so excited all the same time! The flyers are up all over the county. I have contacted the media and I am tracking the books on FedEx. they should be here this weekend.. Now all I have to do is work out the details. I am working on a speech for the book launch. It can’t get any more exciting than this!

A Coward’s Solace Is Available on Kindle!

Whether or not you plan to attend the book launch, (or whether or not you are even able to attend the book launch or not), A Coward’s Solace is available on Amazon Kindle! If you are intrigued by real events from a fictional prospective, you will love A Coward’s Solace. If you like a good love story, you’ll also enjoy A Coward’s Solace. If you are looking to be inspired, again, you will love Book III of The Locket Saga: A Coward’s Solace. Now available on Amazon Kindle.

No Longer Afraid

The other day when I was putting my flyers for the book launch of Book III of the Locket Saga: A Coward’s Solace and the flyer for the writer’s group around town, I put on my Nikes and called them “my just do it” shoes. I liked the play on their logo because it reminded me of this month’s affirmation. I will do it anyway, even if I am afraid.
What is amazing is that this week I discovered something truly amazing. I am no longer afraid. What was fear has now been redefined as excitement. Whether the book launch or the writer’s group is a success or not, I have discovered that I am enjoying the journey.
I am also no longer looking at problems as problems, but rather as challenges that I have to overcome. I have discovered that I am not panicking over every one of these challenges as they come up.
Allowing Room For Others To Procrastinate
I have learned that I am a lot more dependable than several people that I have worked with recently. Although it is frustrating, because I have developed a do-it-now mentality, I get projects out of my hands and into the hands of others sooner so that if they do procrastinate, I can be (as I told one person) the squeaky wheel. Although I am frustrated, I am less frustrated than I would be if I didn’t have this mentality. Dealing with other people is after all just another challenge.

Have Had Calls About the Writer’s Group

since putting up the flyers for the Writer’s Group, I have been receiving calls and continuing my arrangements for the first meeting. I still have to create itinerary and questionnaire handouts for the meeting.and I have to rehearse my speech, Just over a week and it will be history! How time flies when you’re having fun!

More Event In The Works

In October, I plan on participating in another event both as an author and as the president of the writers group. I will have more about that as time draws closer.
In the meantime, I want to work on participating in more book signings around the area and continue to expand my book sales region, more on that later too.

A Coward’s Solace is Now Available on Kindle!

Final cover for A Cowards Solace

That’s right!  I uploaded Book III of the Locket Saga:  A Coward’s Solace onto Kindle. I know that this book does not officially launch until the end of the month, but for anyone who is looking to get a sneak peek at the book can do so on Kindle beginning today! What is A Coward’s Solace about, you ask? Well, let me tell you. A Coward’s Solace is a Historical Christian Romance set at Valley Forge in 1777-1778. a Stranger comes to the cabin where Martha Dawson and Phillip and Elizabeth McCray live This stranger, who goes by the name Head of Stone was raised by the Lenape since he was a child. He is on a mission to avenge his Lenape wife’s, murder.

In a twist of fate, new information about Head of Stone’s past is discovered and he decides to stay with the McCray household for a while. During that time, the ragtag, nearly frozen, half starved Continental Army stumbles into the nearby fields to spend the winter. To the north, a political power struggle threatens to replace the army’s commanding officer because many think that he has become a coward. He has not won a campaign the entire summer of 1777. Hope for the American cause is at an all-time low.

An incident in February 1778 changed everything for Head of Stone and this commanding officer, and their lives would never be the same again.

Download a copy today! Even though A Coward’s Solace can be read without first reading the other books in the Locket Saga Series, please check out other books When God Turned His Head and Soldiers don’t Cry on my Author Central Page

Passed Out Flyers This Week

This week my flyers came back for my book launch so I have been putting them up all over town. Not only does this get the word out via the poster, but I also have been meeting some nice people.

Contacted the Media

I have been working on contacting the media including local newspapers, radio stations, and book stores about my book launch and the start of the writer’s group.

Started A Part Time Job This Week

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I worked at a new job. Not one that paid much, but it was one where I am able to add to my cash flow. It may have been in the upper 90s this week, but winter is fast approaching!

School Started This Week!

My daughter started back to school yesterday.. As a cheer leader at her school, she already has her place in the hierarchy of the school. i told her that she had better not be like one of those girls in the movie Mean Girls.  I think she knows better. . She’s very down to earth, My husband says it is because she is a Taurus, but I say it is because she was raised to think about the needs of others.

Improving Posture To Boost Confidence.

Have you ever noticed that when you improve your posture, your confidence improves? When I sit up straight, with my shoulders back, and my chin up, I feel better. When I stand with my shoulders back, my chin up, and my hips aligned with my shoulders and walk gently moving my arms naturally, my confidence soars. Improving my posture makes a difference in how I relate to other people.

Posturing Not Just About How I Carry Myself

Launching August 31, 2015: Book III of the Locket Saga: A Coward's Solace.

Launching August 31, 2015: Book III of the Locket Saga: A Coward’s Solace.

However, posture is not just about how I carry myself, but it has everything to do with confidence building and that’s what the affirmation this month is all about. As I finish writing the second drafts of both books I still intend to finish this year. (Book 4 of the Locket Saga: Sailing Under The Black Flag and Book Five of the Locket Saga: In the Shadow Of The Millpond) I am also getting ready to launch Book 3 of the Locket Saga: A Coward’s Solace which I intend to launch on August 31, 2015. Posture in this case refers to building the confidence that I need to launch and market my books.

Posturing in this case relates to having the confidence to step out into the world with my book in hand and networking with others to get publicity for this book.

I have a confession to make. I have not been overly confident in my abilities, but that is changing.I know that I am a good writer. I have learned from many of the mistakes that I made with my first books. I have learned how to make each one of by books better as I have written each of them.

So posturing in book writing, first involves knowing that the book that I have written is the best book that it can possibly be.

Posturing With My Appearance

IMG_8330 final copy

One of my goals for 2015 was the goal that I would not leave the house unless I looked my best. This relates to marketing in that when people see me on the street, they will see me as a confident professional person who is in control of her life. When I leave the house looking my best, that is nothing fake about that. I do feel my best when I leave the house and look as though I cared about how I look.

When I know I look good and feel confident, I am more likely to be able to walk into a business and convince the decision maker of that business that they want my books in their store.

Posturing With Good Online Copy

Another way that I posture, is that when i write I do my best to write good copy online. As an author, that is important because if my online content is not legible and relatively free of mistakes, no one is going to want to read my books because they are likely put together as carelessly as my online content.

Posturing In Other Ways

There are other ways to posture for success than how someone looks. During this month, I will be discussing other ways that I posture for success, how I build my confidence especially as it relates to the idea of marketing my books. I hope this month is as informative to you as I am certain it will be to you.

Making Amazing Progress On A Coward’s Solace

Soon I will be adding my new book to my published collection. I have been making amazing progress recently on my upcoming book The Locket Saga Book III- A Coward’s Solace. I just got the book back from my first beta reader who had very few corrections to make and most of those were minor grammatical errors. One mistake that she found was that I had written that George Washington rode a white roan, well, because she is a livestock person, she knew that there is no such animal as a white roan. There are red roans, blue roans, and bay roans, but there is no such animal as a white roan.  Good to know before the book is published for the general public, right?

Final cover for A Cowards Solace

Because she found so few errors in A Coward’s Solace, I was able to make the changes on Tuesday and then yesterday I took the book to my second beta reader. She has a history art degree, so if she finds few errors too and likes the story, I will be able to get it available for the general public very soon.

I have the results for the cover for the book done as well. I took the suggestions of which of four covers everyone liked. Because it had little color (it was black and white) I made the main title red but left the subtitle white and my author name black. This way when the book is in a thumbprint size, the title will still be readable.

Now that the winter weather has passed, and spring rains are upon us, I am looking forward to actually getting out and meeting people like I plan to do. Up to this point this month, I had not been able to because every Wednesday since the beginning of the month there has been no church until last Wednesday when I was in Branson with my daughter. This week, I plan to change all that, because this Wednesday I am going to one of the churches.

BransonLanding

When I spoke to those people in Branson last week, I know I should have shared my business card with them and told them that I was going to have my book When God Turned His Head available free on Kindle on April 4 & 5, but I just didn’t have the guts to do it. Perhaps I should have, but now it is too late. It was, as far as I am concerned, a missed opportunity.

Last week I did share a copy of each of my published books with my business card included  to a silent auction to earn money for a worthy cause. I also have let some sites know that I am going to be giving my books for free on those days. I do however feel really bad that I didn’t share with those employees in Branson.  I think they would have enjoyed a free copy of my book. I really need to learn to put myself out there. What is the worst that could happen? Someone say no thanks? bookcover 4

I still have not picked up my most recent draft of A Coward’s Solace from my first Beta reader. That should happen this week. I really need to get the next step done so that I can move forward toward getting the book published for the general public.

420856_358828254157295_190606055_n

Back in 2010 I wrote my first book. It felt like I was introducing my baby to the world and I didn’t like it when others found reason to criticize it. The problem was the book really did have problems. It had so many typos that some people didn’t like to read it. The formatting both in the print version and the e-book version were severely faulted.

Fortunately I didn’t have ten thousand copies of the book in my garage. I was smart enough to have written the book as a print-on-demand book. That was probably the only smart thing I did with that book.

Additionally, I am learning from my mistakes. I did a complete re-write of When God Turned His Head, reformatted it in print and on Kindle. My second book Soldiers Don’t Cry, The Locket Saga Continues was edited by a professional editor. I also used better formatting with that book. My third book Simply Vegetable Gardening is my first nonfiction book. It is a rewrite of numerous articles that I wrote on Hubpages. I published the book because I am passionate about this niche, and  I have a lot of experience to share.

My fourth book A Coward’s Solace I still need to get  back from my first beta reader and so I can make the necessary changes. When I finish, I will send it to my second beta reader and then to get it edited and finally I will be able to publish.

My biggest challenge in writing a book is not writing the book, editing, or formatting it. My biggest challenge is in marketing my books. if you are an author and have great tips on how to market and build platform, I would love to hear them. If you are a reader who loves the drama of great history, I believe you’ll love my books.

A Coward’s Solace

Thanks to everyone who voted for their favorite cover for my upcoming book, A Coward’s Solace.

Here is the winning cover!

I also wrote the first draft of the description.  So, what do you think? Is this a book you would want to read?  Any suggestions for improvement?

bookcover 4

Out of the woods a feverish white man dressed as an Indian stumbles into Elizabeth Thorton McCray’s home. What is his connection with Elizabeth. Why does the sight of  this man make Martha Dawson;’s heart pound?

In the backdrop of these same frozen woods at Valley Forge, Continental Forces huddle together during the darkest hours of the American Revolution. General Washington had just suffered the worse campaigning season of his career. His contemporaries considered him a coward and incompetent. Phillip, Elizabeth’s husband, since deserting the British army is unsure what his place is in the conflict. Are these men cowards, or is some greater drama unfolding?

Please Help Make A Coward’s Solace the Best It Can Be!

The manuscript of my book A Coward’s Solace is with my first beta reader, but that is not to say that the book is anywhere close to ready to publish for the public.Writing a self-published novel does not end with getting a finished manuscript.  I still have to decide on a blurb for the back of the book, rewrite my bio and there’s the final cover design to choose. Would you help me choose the best cover?

Based only on these cover designs, which one would you most likely pick up to read?
