My blog post on Tuesdays is usually about productive writing related to my books. I usually talk about what I do to produce better quality books. However, recently, my writing production has been more focused on writing online content and less on book writing.

Writing Online Content

For an author, especially Indie Authors, writing the book isn’t the end of the writing process. An author also develops his/her online platform and does PR work. That means writing lots of online content in addition to writing the books.
One of the ways that I do this is by writing this blog. I write it faithfully week in and week out whether it gets read by one hundred people or by only two. This is content that I write faithfully. The content here is mine so I don’t have to worry about losing it because a specific site closed down..

Hubpages

Another place that I have been writing is in Hubpages. I have recently updated my content there so that everything is featured. It wasn’t hard to do, it just took time to improve hub SEO and do a little other editing.
There is a petition of numerous Squidoo writers who are suing Hubpages because they bought out Squidoo and changed the rules on payments. I don’t know what that will mean for the rest of us who have been working with Hubpages for years, but I am keeping my eye on the situation. I don’t want what happened to my content on Bubblews to happen on Hubpages as well. (before payment, Bubblews closed its page down.)
I am trying to get away from this kind of article writing. I have found that it doesn’t pay that much for all the work involved. I do want to do a little more of it, though. There are some articles that I want to write that don’t fit elsewhere and this gives me a venue. Last year I wrote hub and this year I have already written one and started another. I will keep copies of my hubs though, just in case.

Rewriting Book Descriptions

The other day, a friend of mine on one of the groups I am in said that he had not sold any books on Amazon Kindle for several months, but then a few days ago he decided to do some changes on the description and discovered that he got two new sales from that book. It got me to thinking that perhaps that is what I needed to do, so this week I intend to make that one of my writing projects over the next few weeks.
Another one of the writers on the site suggested that we post our descriptions on the site so that others could help give ideas for changes to the descriptions. This is something that I may consider.

Working on new articles on a different site. The reason for the articles isn’t to make nichels and dimes as much as they are to show my expertise on specific subjects such as gardening, novel writing, and Christian beliefs.

Updating Hubpages

For a number of years I have had Hubpages. Recently i have been reworking these “hubs” as they are called and fixing any typos (very few to be found) and updating information. I worked on a number of hubs because they weren’t getting the traffic they need to “stay featured”, so I rewrote a number of them and improving their SEO. SEO doesn’t have the mystic that I used to think it had. Basically I use Google Adwords Keyword Planner to find words that have more traffic, but little competition. Google has the system worked out where online articles will be docked if they have more keyword terms than they deem necessary. Using the keywords in titles and sub headlines and aa time or two in paragraphs is plenty.

No More Bubblews

Last year I had put a lot of time and effort into Bubblews and before the year ended, the site was shut down. No warning to the contributors, just one day I went to go on there and the site was taken down.

E-Zine

In addition to updating Hubpages, I have been adding articles to a site called E-Zine. Basically it is an advertising site that isn’t exactly an advertising site. It is more of a site for business people to show their expertise in specific areas and then in the end pitch themselves or their own products. (No affiliates please). Currently I am working on a number of articles that relate to my expertise  related to my nonfiction books. As it stands right now, to become the top expert in gardening, I need to write almost five hundred articles. Just 497 to go! translate that: (I wrote three so far.)The first ten articles are carefully scrutinized after that, I have more freedom in my writing. because these are picked up by various sites around the internet, learning SEO has been an essential component of my learning curve so far.

Doing More With My Website and Blog

Lately in my studies of online marketing, I have seen where some people are having great success with email marketing campaigns as they relate to their books. Last week I started working on my own e-mail marketing. I started by contacting a group of friends on Facebook and asking them if they would give me their address so that I could send them information regarding my books, my blog, and my online articles. In addition, I will be sharing various events that I will be attending or having. Most of the people that I have contacted so far are friends and relatives of mine that I have known for a long time. These are people that have developed a relationship with. me. I will be talking more about this as I develop this project.

Where I am in My Total Life Makeover Affirmations Of Previous Months

What should I do now?

What should I do now?

January” ” I am organized and productive.” Since I have been getting ready to move, I have gone through my things again and threw out more of what I want bcause I am continuing to downsize.

February: “I am energetic, fit,, strong, and healthy”..I am continuing to eat healthy foods. However, I have not been exercising as I should have.

March:  “I First seek to Understand, then seek to be understood” regarding this affirmation, my focus has been on my family. To tell the truth, this is probably the one affirmation that I find most difficult. I am discovering that I am really resenting that my daughter is getting close with my husband’s girlfriend and that I have being squeezed out of her life. I am trying to be understanding, but all I feel is anger.

April:“I am a spiritual being in a physical body”. I have been spending a lot of time this month building on this affirmation. This month I added Wednesday Bible Studies here on How My Spirit Sings and on Sundays, I write another short Bible Study on Bubblews. The Bible Study on Bubblews has been getting a lot of  attention. I have enjoyed the conversations that I have had with people on that site.

May’s Affirmation

:” I am In Control of My Destiny.”

This month, I have been trying to step out of my comfort zone and do things that show that I am indeed in control of my own destiny. This month on Sunday 5/17/2015 I went to church three times on that same day, and on the last time, I asked the pastor of the church if I could give the message on June 7. As of yet, I have not had a confirmation of that request. In another situation, I got a new to me travel trailer in which to live. In addition, the location where we were to put the trailer fell through and I was required to make several calls to help me decide where to set up the trailer.

I have been digesting the book 50 lessons I Learned From The World’s #1 Goal Achiever. by Vic Johnson. From this book I have been worked on various ways to remind myself that I and no one else is in control of my destiny.

This month I had a photo taken to use in advertizing, social media, and on my book covers. In addition, I re-edited my book When God Turned His Head again.

Making New Friends Everywhere

420856_358828254157295_190606055_n

Helping others is a way of enjoying the journey as go. A few days ago I started a conversation with a guy who as knowledgeable and interested in gardening as I was. The conversation was refreshing for both of us. I even shared with him my secret for preventing blossom end rot in tomatoes. I always dust dried powdered kelp in the planting holes before I plant the tomatoes. He said that he would help me with work on my trailer if I need it.

Another thing that I am doing this month in this department is (I alluded to it earlier in this post) is that I am moving out of my current living situation. My roommate and I decided that this was not the best situation for either of us. In order to keep our friendship, both of us agree that it is best that I leave. The trailer out in the country is so much better for me because I can garden and care for animals which something that I have not done for several years now.

In addition, by moving into my new place, I will be able to help my friends with some issues that they are not able to do themselves and they will be able to help me in other ways. It will be a win-win for us.

Sharing What I Have With Others With The Same Goal

One way that I have been sharing with individuals  with the same goal is helping others with their writing projects. I have done is that I have been writing on Bubblews different aspects and definitions used in self-publishing. I am amazed at how much I already know about this subject and that helps build my confidence as well as helping others.

Another way that I share with others who Have the same goal is that I share my gardening experiences with people who are interested in learning about gardening without using insecticides or chemical fertilizers. My gardens get better and better. Unlike chemically treated gardens, my soil always increases in earthworms and gets deeper and darker every year.

Visualization

I have started visualizing that everything is panning out. This one involves developing visualization techniques related to success. This month I have been visualizing what I envision my trailer will look like when I am done fixing it up. I am visualizing what my book covers will look like when I am done re-creating them.  I am visualizing how things will look in more distant future. I see myself traveling around the country, and speaking at churches, doing book signings, and helping others. I will be discussing more of this on a future post.

Doing Not Just Dreaming

What we dream will never materialize unless we do something about it. Taking action takes time, so it is important to examine how we spend our time to help us get the time we need to do the things that we really value in life. Back in January,  I determined what I am doing that is valuable and what I have been doing that is a waste of time. I am sure that on my death bed I will never say, “I should have spent more time vegging in front of the television or aimlessly surfing the internet”. I am currently working on finding two hours of wasted time per day that I can eliminate. I have started a daily log to determine every waking hour for two full days during the week and one day on the weekend.

Over the weekend I was trying to figure out how I could find another two hours per day that I could better utilize. Usually I read a book on my kindle at work and sometimes will write down a few things. This last weekend, I helped paint the kitchen at work and I wrote down how I was going to spend my week and didn’t do any writing or reading while at work. However, I did write a bubblew on Saturday for Sunday after work.

Book writing  has been taking a back seat lately to doing other things. I seem to take barely any time right now to work on them. Last week I added a Bible Study blog post on  Wednesdays. The rest of my writing is going pretty well. I think it would benefit me if I would take a few minutes every day to determine what I need to do next in each area and then outline that idea.

I think that the most time wasting things that I do is that I am watching old television shows at the same time that I write so my focus is not, well, focused. I like background noise, but perhaps it would behoove me if I listened to music rather than watching television.

What My Accountability Partner Is To Do

To help me keep on track, I will hold myself accountable by asking a friend to be my accountability partner.  My friend will help me stay accountable for staying on track and completing  my planned actions. I plan to ask my friend to meet me for coffee or lunch one day per month. When we get together, I will tell my friend about what  I have finished during the month since I saw her and then tell her what I intend to do during the next month. If my friend has any suggestions, I will listen, but she doesn’t have to provide any added benefits. She just needs to listen and hold me accountable to my own goals. Just the fact that I have to explain myself to someone else will provide me with incentive to follow through with my monthly plans.

Janurary’s Affirmation: I am Organized and Productive

What should I do now?

What should I do now?

What I have accomplished in January

My total life makeover is off to a great start. The past month has been a productive a month where I have focused on getting organized and developing my productivity. In the process of getting organized and more productive,  I have been developing my strategy for next month’s affirmation, posts and Bubblews. I have even thought about a few hubs that I intend to add to my list, but as I see it right now, I have pretty much completed most of the hubs that I intend to do on Hubpages. Oh, I will update each of the hubs that I have written and will probably add another hub from time to time, but I pretty much have all the hubs I want. For now, I am going to work on Bubblews and my blog for adding content on line and perhaps I will find another venue upon which to write, but mostly I want to focus on getting my books published, getting them publicity, and growing a following for them.

I am amazed at how much more work I am able to finish every day. I have finished my editing of A Coward’s Solace and have sent off to get a physical copy of it for my beta reader. I told her that I am giving her a month to read it and tell me what she likes and doesn’t like about the book, and especially where she sees holes in the story. I am mostly interested in where I could use improvement. I like considering myself a good writer and a good writer wants to improve on a regular basis.

My next project regarding A Coward’s Solace will be finishing four covers for my followers to pick their favorites. More on this soon. Which brings us to the fact that this month is ending and the beginning of February means a new month and a new affirmation.

February’s Affirmation: I am Energetic, Fit, Strong, and Healthy

This is the body that dieting got me. Let's see where a healthy lifestyle leads.

This is the body that dieting got me. Let’s see where a healthy lifestyle leads.

What I hope to accomplish in February

February will not be about dieting. Even though I do expect to drop weight, February’s affirmation will be about getting healthy and staying healthy. It will be about educating myself about and creating lifestyle changes that positively affect my health. Over the month I will research, examine, and share what I discover, and I will also be living out the lifestyle changes that I endorse.

As I did in January, I am going to be focusing on my affirmation and acting on that affirmation. What will be different however is that instead of doing one thing every day and building on that, I have a checklist that I go by and utilize on a daily basis. On that checklist I include what I eat, what should be eating, the exercise that I get on a daily basis, how much sleep I am getting, and even how I deal with the stress of the day. I may tweak my checklist over the month or it might stay the same.

Continuing with January’s Affirmation

Just because I am adding a new affirmation in February, does not mean that I will stop doing what I started doing in January. In February, I will continue to affirm what I did in January. I  continue to be organized and productive, but I am also Energetic, Fit, Strong, and Healthy. I am love the fact that my life is getting better every day and that is what this blog, the affirmations, the goals, the plans, and the actions are all about.

Was January as organized and productive as you wanted it to be? Will February be just as good or even better?

Taking Advantage of Parkinson’s Law

I am learning the best tool for meeting my goals. It is in using deadlines. Last week I decided that I would finish editing my book A Coward’s Solace and publish it in a form to give to my first beta reader. That is exactly what I did. Because I had that project to do, I was pressed for time. I wasn’t sure that I would be able to get this blog out. Rather than giving up and making the excuse that I didn’t have time, I decided that I would take advantage of Parkinson’s Law and go ahead and try to see if I could finish the blog after all. I figured that I could at least get started on it. So here I am.

What is Parkinson’s Law?

Parkinson’s Law – work expands to fill the time available for its completion

Creating Deadlines Makes Me Focus on Meeting My Goals

Because I am limiting the time that I have to complete this project by using this deadline, I have to focus on the project. That was why I finished editing my manuscript last week. I decided that I would have it edited and formatted by the time that I went to work Thursday afternoon. That was exactly what I did. I have one major goal off the table thanks to the deadline that I gave it. If I didn’t have the deadline I would probably still be editing.

This week I will have several other deadlines that I intend to complete. For instance, this week January ends so I have to have both this blog and the one for next Thursday finished along with the remaining Bubblews that I want to write. I also am working on an on-line marketing campaign for my book: Simply Vegetable Gardening. Last year I got the book out a little too late for the gardening season, so I want to focus on that market. In addition, I need to do some research for my February Affirmation which will be: I am Energetic, Fit, Strong, and Healthy. More on that subject later. Oh, yes, I also have the covers for A Coward’s Solace to work on. If I can get all that done, I will start working on the next novel that I intend to publish this year: Sailing under the Black Flag

What about you? Do Deadlines Help you meet your goals?
