June is Entrepreneurs “Do It Yourself” Marketing Month! As a self-publishing author, I enjoy taking responsible for my own marketing success. This month I am focusing a lot of my energy and time on self-publishing marketing projects. It is all part of my goals in building my publishing business during the next ninety days.

The Trouble With Traditional Advertising

I have seen a lot of articles lately regarding advertising to sell books. People think that the easiest way to get results from marketing is to create an ad campaign and wait for the results. What people don’t realize is that taking out ads is one of the least effective ways of getting results from marketing. The cost per book sale is more costly than The best way is and has always been through word of mouth and referrals.

Word of mouth can come in many different ways. One way for me to get word of mouth is for friends and family to get the word around about my books. Another is to attend live events like fairs and festivals and introduce myself to others in person. Still another way is to let people get to know me by speaking at meetings or conferences. I can also create live events of my own. On July eleventh, I am going to be attending an event that was created for me at the libraries in Mount Vernon and Marionville, Missouri.

Although I enjoy the live events and\ would love to be able to have more of them, they are costly and offer an even lower return on investment than the advertisements do for book marketing success. So what are good ways to market my book that has a better return on investment?

What should I do now?

What should I do now?

In this we posture ourselves through building our network. Posturing as you will remember from past posts is making ourselves look and feel good and builds self confidence and success.

My website

Everyone should have a website. At one time, you could put a website up on the web and let it sit and lots of people would show up. That is not the case anymore. To posture for success in an online social network, it is important to have a well-crafted website to fully posture in networking.
Helping Others
I have heard it said that ‘people don’t care how much you know as long as they know how much you care.”
Someone who comes to your site wants to know that they can come to your site without being bombarded with advertisements begging for you to buy this or that. What they want is for you to share with them enough so that they know that they can trust you. The first thing that you have to sell is yourself. After that, the rest is easy.
Just because someone doesn’t purchase something from you, does not make them or their enquiry a waste of your time or effort. Though the visitor may not buy anything, they could become allies The more helpful you were, the more vocal they will be. And who knows, one day they may require your services.

Make Friends

Social media has made it possible to reach out to others as never before. Be it having a blog, using Facebook, using Twitter, or using Youtube or any combinations of other sites, social media gives you a way to posture to the world.
Online press releases also help give you credibility online. When a news service picks up your press releases and you remain consistent, you will develop a way to grow more confidently than imaginable. Make certain that you r press releases explain what is involved or who is doing what or why should they even care?
While on social media sites, like Linkedin, Facebook and twitter, it is important to build excitement and interest. You have to participate.
Respect Those Around You
The best way to use social media is not jumping onto Twitter and following everyone you can to spam them with your books or other products. The last thing you should do is create a Facebook business page and tell all your friends and family to “follow you” only to inundate them with a call to action of “Contact us today to find out more”.

Instead, make all your interactions on your chosen social network medium about relating to others in a positive way. Avoid at all cost negative comments they only alienate everyone around you. . Help them and show them that you are not trying to simply sell to them, but to get to know them as the real people that they are.

Don’t Bore Others With Your Accomplishments

Don’t make all your social network interactions only about you. Make your network about others and share in their interactions on occasions.
If a member of your network has just landed a big deal, got married, expanded their business or is simply going along nicely, comment on it and share their news with the rest of your followers. Even if all you do is congratulate them on their achievements, it shows that you are interested in more than just what you have done

Give and Expect Nothing In Return

Not that you are likely to get nothing, but there is a law of reciprocity in which says that when you give, you will receive more than you gave in return. Make it a habit that Every time someone does you a good turn, do them one in return even if it is just an email thanking them.

Never take more than you have already put in. Take your time and be patient. Remember, building your network will take some time and effort and the last thing you want to be doing is undermining said effort by soliciting business at every conceivable opportunity. Remember to pay it forward.

Connect with Others Emotionally

The key difference between being connected to a social network versus participating in one, is that they are not one and the same and to approach them as such would be fool hardy at best. The second means that you have a vested time interest in the network.
By Investing time and effort on cultivating a social network, you will see returns. Sign up to or simply Post relevant articles on your website to Facebook or tweet on twitter several times per day and comment on other people’s posts. You only get back what you put into social media
