I learned a number of years ago that kelp is an excellent supplement not only for me, but for my pets, livestock, and the Soil. Kelp is a form of seaweed that I think everyone should know about. This is why I wrote this book.

Food Supplement

Probably many of our health problems relate to the lack of trace minerals. Kelp contains every trace mineral our bodies need. I sprinkled kelp powder in my animals’ food. (Chickens loved it, goats not so much, but they ate it). I took it in tablet form. Kelp is chep and  in my opinion, it is far more effective as a food supplement than most food supplements that cost three, four and even five times as much.

Gardening Aid

As it states on the cover of my book Simply Vegetable Gardening, I started gardening over forty years ago. During that time the only way I ever gardened was by using strictly organic methods. I used my household food garbage and yard wastes and composted them (sometimes directly into the garden). I fed the soil. Kelp and DE were the only supplements I ever bought for my garden. When I put kelp into the planting holes when planting tomatoes, they never have blossom end rot (a common problem locally).

High Iodine Content

Kelp is high in iodine, is in a form easily absorbed, and therefore is a great supplement of that mineral. Iodine protects our bodies from the effects of radiation both from the sun and nuclear fallout. In addition, iodine supports the thyroid so kelp might help in weight loss.

Good For Ecology

Extensive Kelp growing could in many ways be used to improve not only the soil but also the oceans by removing excess nutrients causing dead zones when harvested. By taking these excess nutrients and putting them back on the land, the nutrients are moved from where they are not needed back to where plants, animals and even people are deficient in the nutrients it provides..

In December of last year I wrote two small books. One was Using Diatomaceous Earth Around the House and Yard and the other was Help From Kelp. I wrote both books because I wanted more information available to my readers about these two substances and how they can help reduce the effects of harmful toxic chemicals in our daily lives.

Here are two sources about the value of kelp that scientists are currently investigating.regarding kelp helping save the environment.

Organizing my writing day

I mentioned in a previous post that I write best when I get up first thing in the morning and write any new material that I am going to write that day. I have made this a habit and thereby I have developed the habit of writing every day. Some days I write just fifteen minutes per day, but on other days I might spend the whole morning writing until I can’t write any more that day. Sometimes I write all morning on the same project (like during NaNoWriMo) but most of the time I divide my writing time between different projects. This year, I have decided to limit my writing time to morning and using my afternoons as time that I do  book marketing.

Signaling my Muse to Get to Work

As you know, by writing every morning, I have developed the habit of writing every day.  More importantly, my muse knows when it is time to do her thing. Creativity doesn’t always come, but getting words on paper whether good or poor quality is always better than no words at all.

Setting consistent time and place to write

In addition to writing at a specific time during the day, I usually write at my desk in my office of my church. I get dressed for work and sit and professionally write. There are several reasons for this. It helps activate my muse.

I don’t always write at my desk, however. Sometimes just for a change of pace, I will write in a different location. Sometimes I even write in the afternoon or evening, especially on a weekend when I have nothing else going on.

All of this talk about consistent time and location may seem redundant, but I can’t stress it enough. Believe me when I say that these two aspects writing is important. Even fifteen minutes per day writing new material will make a big dent in your writing production goals by the end of the year.

Determining What to Work on Each Day

Because I want to start writing first thing every morning, I determine at the end of my writing session what I will complete the next day. Rather than waiting until the end of the whole day, I determine what I will be doing at the end of each session. This way not only do I know what I am going to write the next day, but I can also easily know how I want to continue writing when I am already on a given train of thought.

My Latest Nonfiction

Sometimes it helps to make changes in the middle of projects. I had planned to finish the second draft of the new book I started for NaNoWriMo in November and finish the edits on my next novel in the Locket Saga: Book IV: Sailing Under the Black Flag. This was what I did at the end of November when at my writer’s group meeting, I agreed to host one day of the Ozark Sustainable Living University at my church. At this meeting, as an author, I would be able to sell some of my books. The only book that I had written that I thought would be likely to sell was Simply Vegetable Gardening.I decided that in order to have more variety, I would write two short books that I had done some research for that I ended up calling Help from Kelp and Using Diatomaceous Earth in the Home and Yard.

I worked on these books all through December (along with editing Sailing under the Black Flag). I went over to my second beta reader’s house and between the two of us we completely edited both booklets in one afternoon. After we finished, I formatted the books for print and thanks to the wonder of print on demand, I have fifteen copies of each for OSLU. The event is this weekend. I also have the books available in paperback online.

Something new for Fridays

Since I have moved my dates of when I am doing my blog posts, it gives me a long stretch of four days when I don’t have anything posted. I don’t however want to write another blog so I decided that I would put a video blog up of a video that someone else has done about the writing process or book marketing. This way, you will be hearing writing ideas from a different perspective. These perspectives may or may not reflect the views of this blogs author.

As I was evaluating my failures and successes of last year, I saw that I did very well at being a productive writer. I seriously edited my first book (hopefully for the last time), I wrote and published my 46ths books (the last two I published the last day of the year, but it still counts) also I completed the second drafts of two books, and completed the first draft of yet another, plus wrote numerous online articles and wrote this blog all year. However, I also learned that although I had a small amount of success in marketing my books, my book sales were nowhere near what I wanted or needed as a full time writer. Therefore, I needed to find out what I was doing wrong and what I needed to add to my daily tasks to become more successful at selling my books.

Organizing My Writing Day to Include Marketing

Probably the most important thing that I noticed about how I was marketing my books was that marketing was an afterthought. rather than a key component to my writing business thus far. Sure I had done a few things  I wrote a couple of press releases, had been on the radio, had included it in my business plan, but I really have not made a plan to incorporate marketing into my daily routine. Since I know that I want to continue being nearly as productive as I have been, but I also know that just producing good writing is not going to sell books. I also know that I do my best writing/content writing in the morning. Therefore, I have determined that I will write in the morning and then in the afternoon focus on developing, maintaining, and utilizing my marketing plan.

Getting the Big Picture

In order to get the big picture, I have had to start researching what others are doing to promote their books. First, I had to realize that one format doesn’t fit all. I can put a book not just into a paperback format, but e-book formats as well. In these e-book formats there are numerous formats, not just Kindle. There is Nook, Kobo, and even pdf formats. In addition, I can format my books as an audio book. With some of my nonfiction books I could also make them into Power Point presentations that that I could sell as movies, presentations, or at least as trailers for the books.. Each of these formats can be marketed separately building on the overall  platform that my books represent.

Marketing should not only include marketing my books, but marketing myself as well. I have a lot of good qualities that would make a good speaker on the subjects that I want to address. Not only am I a writer, but I am also a speaker and someone who can teach others how to do many of the things that I do. Building trust is an important aspect of book marketing. By demonstrating to my online and real life audience that I know what I am talking about and that i am interested in helping them, they learn to trust me and will buy what I have to offer. Part of this trust is built through this blog, but also through other online contributions such as online articles or YouTube videos.  In person, this can be accomplished when I meet people at festivals, at book signings, and at conferences.

Two New Booklets to Market in Print

In addition to learning more about online book marketing, I now also have two new books to market in print both online and in real life. I also intend to make these books available as e-books as well. These booklets are Help from Kelp and Using Diatomaceous Earth in the Home and Garden. More about them next Tuesday on my Productive Writer post. Check them out now along with my other books on by Lulu.com Author Spotlight Page http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/cygnetbrown
