blue skies

When the sun sets on one project, it rises on others.

Working on Final Edits of yet another Tome of the Locket Saga

Now that Sailing under the Black Flag is out and available for general purchase and I have the templates that I need to do my marketing projects, I can again focus on moving onto other projects. The writing process doesn’t end when a book is launched. The process just continues on with more writing projects. One of those projects is Book V of the Locket Saga: In the Shadow of the Millpond. I finished the second draft of this book last summer and am currently working on my final editing process.

When doing this final editing process, I work from macro-issues such as story continuity down to micro-issues such as getting rid of passive language, and ensuring that I am using the right punctuation and spelling.

I learned that by editing in this order, getting the story line right, and then fixing more detailed problems like getting the right word or punctuation, I am not editing material that I will eventually edit out anyway. This is a time saving devise that often gets overlooked in fiction writing, but this can literally save days of work over the course of the editing process.

Starting New Research to Keep the Series Going

In addition to working on this final editing process, I am starting research for Book VII of the Locket Saga which has the current working title of Two Rivers about two cousins who in 1803 take different rivers. Andrew Mayford takes the Mississippi southward to Natchez, and Isaac Thorton takes the Missouri westward with the Lewis and Clark expedition. Not only will they be going in different directions physically, but the paths they take will take them in different directions philosophically as well.

Thinking about another Garden-Based Book Project

Another project that I was talking to my brother about today was the idea of sustainable gardening. This concept goes deeper than organic gardening and even deeper than permaculture in that the focus isn’t just on the plant life, or the domesticated animals that are brought to help sustain the humans living on an acreage, but focuses on the life cycles of every organism including micro-organisms. The idea is based on the premise that the earth is not just an inert pile of pulverized rocks that will function with chemicals pumped into it but is a living breathing organism in its own right.

The idea includes the idea that human beings don’t have to destroy the earth in order to sustain himself, but can work with nature, recycling all of his wastes back into the soil and benefiting all creatures in a symbiotic relationship.

Poor Results from Email Campaign

IAs I said in previous posts, I have made reaching out the book buyers my focus. By this weekend I intend to have the first introductory email out to booksellers and will begin locating and connecting with reviewers. In addition, I will begin sending a second email to the booksellers concerning the Locket Saga, particularly now that the fourth book in the series is now available for sale and wholesale pricing for the book. Just because my marketing focus will move on, does not mean that I should stop working to get more booksellers to buy and sell my books. The process is really quite boring right now, because I have received no feedback as of yet. I guess the lack of feedback indicates that is that the emails are not working.

Getting Ready to Launch Sailing Under the Black Flag

I have been selling quite a few Sailing under the Black Flag to friends and family despite the online price increase. I am making plans to do an online launch. More on this in a later post.

I have been thinking about attending more events over the course of the next several months. Now that I am east of the Mississippi, I am closer to more people. I am even looking for another source of positive cash flow (read that to mean I am looking for a job).

(Scripture reference: Genesis chapters 16,17, 21, Hebrews 11:8-13)

Abrahams family

Abram and his wife Sari were childless. Abraham thought that he would have to leave everything he had to his servant, but God told him that he would have a son. Abram waited several years and still they had no child. God even changed Abram’s name to Abraham and Sara’s name to Sarah.

Then Abraham and Sarah thought that they would help God along by having Sarah’s servant Hagar carry Abraham’s child. Sarah despised Hagar and her son born of Abraham. This son Ishmael was not God’s promised son for Abraham and Sarah.

We need to realize that God is always faithful to deliver his promises. A lot of the problems that people face in the Middle East today have everything to do with Abraham and Sarah’s impatience for God to move. Their child finally did come and they named him Isaac. God followed through just as he promised.

There are times in our own lives when we also are faced God delaying his promises to us. We believe that God told us one thing, but when it didn’t immediately occur, we start to doubt. Other times we think that there is something that we need to do to make it happen and we step out ahead of God’s provision.  We think that perhaps we really didn’t hear from God like we thought or we decide to “help God” make this promise come true. When we do this, like the situation with Abraham, it always turns out to be a disaster.

Cover of Sailing Under the Black Flag

Cover of Sailing Under the Black Flag

Tuesday, I took you through what I do to produce a book. It took me a long time to tweak the process that I now use to produce my books. I must confess that my marketing plan, especially online has not been what I would like it to be, so lately I have been studying marketing tactics and strategies.

Gone are the days of the idea portrayed in the movie Field of Dreams where if you build it, they will come. Build a book and without marketing, my books could sit on the proverbial e-bookshelf for months.Gone too are the days, for most writers anyway, when when traditional  publishers whisk authors out of obscurity, give them huge advances on their first novels and give them the publicity tour of their dreams. I have talked to enough authors to know that I prefer the Indie author route, hard though it may be, anyway.. I have determined that if I need to do most of the marketing myself, I am going to get more of the pay than I would have if I looked for a publisher to publish my books.

Book Marketing Starts with the Book

One of the first considerations in book marketing must begin with the book itself including the cover. One important thing to remember about the cover is that the title has to be prominent. Part of the reason for this is that the book cover can be as small as thumbprint size on some sites and being able to read this title will be vital. Another important consideration on the book cover is my biography and the book description. Not only do we want an exciting description to hook the reader into the book, but it helps to consider SEO as well so that when people are looking for my type of book, the reader will easily be able to find it.

Inside the book, marketing continues not only for this specific book where you encourage readers to review the book and share it with their friends on social media, but also previous books through back of the book advertising and for future books by encouraging the reader to connect with me through my social media, my website, and my newsletter.

Before My Next Book Launches

There is a lot marketing work that can and should be done prior to a book launch. Part of that marketing includes making people aware in your social network (through social media) that you are going to be launching another book. Part of that pre-launch activity that I have started doing for my upcoming book Sailing under the Black Flag is to ask my social network which book cover design they prefer. I started with ten potential covers, reduced it to three and chose the final cover.

In addition, I need continue increasing my network, particularly influencers and other authors is something that I need to work on prior to the e-book launch.

Paperback Book Launch

Once upon a time in traditional book marketing history, books came out first as hard cover books, then as paperbacks. Now books are more likely to come out as paperbacks and e-books. Some authors start by publishing e-books first, and follow with paperbacks, but I prefer to start with the paperback and then do the e-book. Part of the reason has to do with timing. Usually, I find myself finishing the editing process just before a major summer or autumn event and I like to have physical copies of my print book available at those events. This year is no different.  I intend to have copies of Sailing under the Black Flag available for Corry Fest in June. In addition, I will contact book reviewers to see if they would be willing to read and review a pdf book while I am waiting for the print books to come in. In return for their review, I will then give them print copies of the book for reviewing the book.

E-book Launch on Amazon

I create the print book for live events, but I tend to publish e-books for online sales. Here’s my plan for the e-book launch. Prior to the e-book launch of Sailing under the Black Flag, I am going to complete the KDP select promotions that I have on my other books leading up to the e-book launch. I will have a couple of weeks between each promotion. I will promote them on all of my promotional sites. Once the In addition, I will be doing a presale of Sailing under the Black Flag on Kindle prior to the launch on Amazon. Once the book is out on e-book, I will then complete my promotion on KDP select for that book.

Wide E-book Launch

Once the e-book has completed its promotional obligation on Amazon, I will give it what is called a “wide launch” this means that I will put it out in other formats other than the format used on Amazon. For this I will be using Smashwords because Smashwords not only offers to create the various e-book formats, but they distribute to the various distribution sites as well.Over the next several weeks I will be sharing this experience with all my readers. I hope you enjoy the journey with me.

My affirmation for November was that I write a novel every November for NaNoWriMo. This month was no exception. As you can see, I wrote the entire first draft of my novel The Anvil in less than 30 days. I currently have over 56 thousand words written.  I actually had that first draft completed and turned in by the twentieth. Like last year, I moved during this time, but I still got it all done.

What should I do now?

Cygnet Brown writing.

Working on Two Nonfiction Books

In addition to the The Anvil, I worked on two nonfiction books about overcoming writer’s block. These two books are moving along amazingly fast. I have almost 15 thousand words in both nonfiction books. One book is regards fiction writing and writer’s block and the other regards nonfiction and writer’s block. I am certain that you will be hearing more about these books in the days to come.

The Final Edits on Sailing Under the Black Flag

Finally, in addition to working on the novel and the two new nonfiction books, I am working on the final edits of Sailing under the Black Flag. By the end of next month, I have promised to get a copy of this book to my first beta reader so that she can do her part in the editing process.
December’s Affirmation: I am Forward Thinking
Can you believe that a year is already almost over? In December, I am going to be looking over the past year to see how much has changed during this year. I am also going to be looking ahead at the upcoming year. Rather than waiting for January to determine what 2016 will be like, I will do so in December. I will make a few quick adjustments next month so that I can make 2016 an even better year than 2015 has been.

Taking Advantage of Parkinson’s Law

I am learning the best tool for meeting my goals. It is in using deadlines. Last week I decided that I would finish editing my book A Coward’s Solace and publish it in a form to give to my first beta reader. That is exactly what I did. Because I had that project to do, I was pressed for time. I wasn’t sure that I would be able to get this blog out. Rather than giving up and making the excuse that I didn’t have time, I decided that I would take advantage of Parkinson’s Law and go ahead and try to see if I could finish the blog after all. I figured that I could at least get started on it. So here I am.

What is Parkinson’s Law?

Parkinson’s Law – work expands to fill the time available for its completion

Creating Deadlines Makes Me Focus on Meeting My Goals

Because I am limiting the time that I have to complete this project by using this deadline, I have to focus on the project. That was why I finished editing my manuscript last week. I decided that I would have it edited and formatted by the time that I went to work Thursday afternoon. That was exactly what I did. I have one major goal off the table thanks to the deadline that I gave it. If I didn’t have the deadline I would probably still be editing.

This week I will have several other deadlines that I intend to complete. For instance, this week January ends so I have to have both this blog and the one for next Thursday finished along with the remaining Bubblews that I want to write. I also am working on an on-line marketing campaign for my book: Simply Vegetable Gardening. Last year I got the book out a little too late for the gardening season, so I want to focus on that market. In addition, I need to do some research for my February Affirmation which will be: I am Energetic, Fit, Strong, and Healthy. More on that subject later. Oh, yes, I also have the covers for A Coward’s Solace to work on. If I can get all that done, I will start working on the next novel that I intend to publish this year: Sailing under the Black Flag

What about you? Do Deadlines Help you meet your goals?

The other day, I hear someone say something about productivity that was so profound, that I had to remember it. I was listening to a video and the man on the video said that before he started doing a task or project, he asked himself if there was anything more important that he should have been doing at that moment.

What should I do now?

What should I do now?

Is there something more important that I should be doing rather than doing what I am doing right now?

If I were to be doing something, and I were to come up with an answer that was not no, then I would have to ask myself why am I not doing the thing that is more important? The answer to that question, if answered honestly would probably give you a reason for your procrastination of the reason that you are not doing the more important project.

That can be said about anything that we are doing. If I am tired, is working on that project the most important thing I should be doing? Probably not. Sometimes, getting a good night’s sleep and working on that project in the morning might just probably be the most profitable thing I can do both in the standpoint of the project and my health. I have learned that sleep is a high priority on my list of things to do.

My Most Important Project: Finishing and Publishing A Coward’s Solace

I am coming close to finishing my novel A Coward’s Solace the third book in the Locket Saga. In a few days I will be publishing a private copy for my first beta reader to read. She will read it and give me feedback on what she thought of it.  In the meantime I will be doing a survey on what one of four covers others would like to see on the book.

My Next Big Project: Sailing Under the Black Flag.

I am looking forward to working on my next novel which I call Sailing under the Black Flag. I have been reading lately about the editing process, and like all good writers, I will try to streamline my editing process and put out a better product with each book that I write. Fortunately, I know most of my main characters and I have finished much of my research, and I have finished my first draft. To streamline my editing process, I am going to edit my first draft before moving onto my second draft of 80 thousand words. I will determine what works and what doesn’t work in the first draft so that I am not tripping over poorly written, unnecessary words just so that I can get word count. This is what slowed me down in writing A Coward’s Solace. I didn’t want to lose my word count. The swift knife of editing before moving on will take care of that.

While I am working on my edits of Sailing Under the Black Flag, I am going to create an on-going writing and editing strategy for getting my books written and into my readers more regularly. I have four first drafts of novels in the Locket Saga written and I have the ambitious goal of getting three of those books out this year. If I develop a strategy to get it all done, and actually put in the time every day to make it happen, there is no reason I can’t complete this goal.

Developing an On-going Marketing Strategy

This is one area where I have to admit that I have not done very well when it has come to writing my books. What good is writing the best book ever written (I know, that’s pretty grandiose, but then what is authorship but a grandiose experience?) if no one knows its out there. Its like asking the question: If a tree in the forest falls to the ground, but no one hears it, does it actually make a sound. Of course it does, but there is no one there to care.

As it stands right now, I have a couple of ideas for my first three books that I need to implement right away. These ideas should also help me develop my marketing strategy for both A Coward’s Solace and Sailing Under the Black Flag. More on this as my marketing strategy unfolds.

Planning Ahead for February

I know that we are just over half way through with January, but I am already thinking ahead and planning for my affirmation and posts for February. Here’s what I am thinking. My February Affirmation will be: I am energetic, healthy, and fit. Rather than taking one specific action each day, I am going to change it out a bit and create a checkoff sheet of healthy things that I will do or not do every day of the month. I can even include on this sheet a place to write down how I feel that day about checking off or not checking off the items on the sheet. In order to get this done by February, I will definitely need to have created the sheet before the beginning of that month. Again, more about this later.

Planning for the Rest of the Year

I have a document that I created at the beginning of the month that outlines a little of what I might want to accomplish during the coming year. These include affirmations that still need work. I am also going to start working on some ideas for bubblews that I want to write during the year. (So far I have most of this month’s bubblews written). (Check out my bubblews entries here) During the remainder of this month (January), I intend to work on this document so that I am better able to focus on the other projects that I intend to have done by the end of the year.

If the remainder of the year is as fruitful for me as this month has already been for me, I believe that I will have a successful year indeed.
